WELCOME TO THE GUY JEWELL CUP
The Guy Jewell Cup competition is hosted by Basingstoke and North Hants cricket Club and is named after Mr Guy Jewell who was a spin bowler who played for BNHCC during the 1950’s. He set up the competition in 1952 to give local cricketers, playing for the surrounding village teams, a chance to play at May’s Bounty, the home of BNHCC, where First Class County Cricket has regularly taken place.
The competition has grown and developed over the past sixty years to become the premier twenty over knockout cricket competition in North Hampshire with upwards of twenty-four teams typically entering each year. Having celebrated its Diamond Jubilee year in 2011 the competition continues to reflect current limited over cricket trends with the recent introduction of fielding restrictions and power plays.
During the Diamond Jubilee year the competition was sponsored by Bluebird Care one of the South of England’s biggest care at home providers. The Guy Jewell committee are extremely grateful to everyone at Bluebird Care for their help and support .
The competition runs from May until August with a Finals Day held on August bank Holiday Sunday. The competition is open to all bone fide clubs and the format comprises twenty overs per side with games decided on a knockout basis. Wherever possible games are played on May’s Bounty, the home of BNHCC, and scorers and umpires are provided by the Guy Jewell organising committee.
The competition is hosted by BNHCC and is now run jointly by Mr Bill Blake and Mr Derek Dicker. However, we remember with great affection Mr Cyril Thompson who was involved with The Guy Jewell Cup for over sixty years until his death in autumn 2014. Cyril, fantastically supported by his wife Rita until her death in 2006, managed the competition for over 40 years. Everyone at BNHCC is very proud to be associated with The Guy Jewell Cup competition, Cyril's enduring legacy to the club.
